Pest and Disease of Broad Beans
Broad beans are healthy plants in the main and aside from aphids are affected by very few pests or diseases.
This is good news for the amateur gardener and it makes broad beans a good crop for the beginner.
APHIDS
The signs of an aphid attack on broad beans are misshapen leaves which curl up at the edges. Bad attacks will also leave a gooey substance especially around the growing tips.
To avoid or lessen any attack spray the plants with derris which is a natural insecticide. pinch out the growing tips of the stems to reduce the amount of food for aphids. Click here for our main article on aphid treatment.
Broad Beans though, will withstand a very large attack by aphids with little damage to the beans. The pods may well be covered in a gooey mess but don't give up on them. Water from a watering can will go a long way to clear the worst of the aphids.
MICE If you sow your seeds and very few seedlings emerge, mice are probably your problem. They dig the seeds up and eat them. There are very few alternatives to setting straps.

Broad beans have few diseases but do suffer from aphid attacks. I've experienced the blackened leaves you mentioned, in young plants. Ignore it and let them grow on.

Hi Please please help. I love broad beans, fresh or cooked but have little success in growing either outdoors or in my polytunnel!!!! The plants when small get black around the edges and I cannot find any site that describes this or how to treat. I have now planted Andaluce? outdoors and under cover and they are about 6" tall and again developing this problem. I have cut off the infected leaves and destroyed but with so many plants this may be a problem. HELP please Marilyn

I have just removed the growing tips of my plants .. they are a little over 1.0 meter high and appear healthy. There are aphids there but they do not appear to be doing any harm. My concern is that the flower have turned dark brown and fallen without the appearance of any seed pods. Any thoughts?

I have been keeping Broad Bean seed (Jonas, heritage variety) for some years. I have just noticed small holes in much of the dried seed, and as I watched a black beetle dug it;'s way out of a seed. What have I got, and can it be prevented (organicall) in the future?

My broad beans have not thrived. The roots have not spread much and on pulling up some, I found orange/brown caterpillars/worms? about 1 - 2 cm long crawling on the roots. WHat are they, and what should I do?
